How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
Your Life Path number comes from your birth date, and it takes about a minute to work out by hand. The arithmetic is simple, but there is one step that a surprising number of calculators skip — and skipping it changes the answer for a meaningful minority of people. Here is the correct method, worked through with examples.
The rule that matters most
Reduce the month, the day, and the year separately first. Then add those three results together and reduce once more. Do not add every digit of the date in one go.
Both methods give the same answer most of the time, which is why the shortcut survives. But when they differ, the separate-reduction method is the standard one, and it is what allows a true master number to appear rather than being flattened into a single digit.
A worked example
Take 3 March 2003. The month is 3, already a single digit. The day is 3, already a single digit. The year is 2003, which reduces to 2 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 5. Now add the three parts: 3 + 3 + 5 = 11. Eleven is a master number, so it stays as it is. This person has a master Life Path 11.
Run the same date through the shortcut method and you get 3 + 3 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 11 as well — in this case they agree. But take 29 December 1971: month 12 reduces to 3, day 29 reduces to 11 (a master number, so it stops), year 1971 reduces to 18 then 9. Adding the parts gives 3 + 11 + 9 = 23, which reduces to 5. The methods and the intermediate steps diverge frequently enough that it is worth doing it properly.
Reading the result
Your final number will be 1 through 9, or one of the master numbers 11, 22, or 33. Each describes a different broad terrain — the recurring themes, strengths, and friction points your life tends to organise around.
If the total standing behind your number was 13, 14, 16, or 19 before it reduced, your chart also carries a karmic debt number. That is not a punishment; it marks a theme the tradition says you are being asked to work at deliberately rather than coast through.
The steps
- Reduce the month. Reduce your birth month to a single digit, stopping at 11 or 22 if you reach them. January is 1, December (12) becomes 1 + 2 = 3.
- Reduce the day. Reduce your birth day the same way, stopping at 11 or 22. The 29th becomes 2 + 9 = 11, which is a master number and stops there.
- Reduce the year. Add the four digits of your birth year and reduce. 1971 becomes 1 + 9 + 7 + 1 = 18, then 1 + 8 = 9.
- Add the three results. Add your reduced month, day, and year together. Do not skip the separate reductions — this is the step that preserves master numbers.
- Reduce once more. Reduce the total to a single digit unless it is 11, 22, or 33, which are master numbers and stay as they are. The result is your Life Path number.

Do I use my birth date or my current time zone?
Use the calendar date where you were born, as recorded on your birth certificate. Numerology works from the date itself and does not need a birth time or location, unlike astrology.
What if I get 11, 22 or 33?
Those are master numbers and are left unreduced. They carry the themes of their reduced base — 11 of the 2, 22 of the 4, 33 of the 6 — but at a more intense and demanding pitch.
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Almost always because it adds every digit of the date at once instead of reducing month, day and year separately first. The separate-reduction method is standard and is what NinePaths uses.
